Abstinence Only Education
Or "The Big Republican Fuckup Part 2"
There's a whole group of bible-thumping conservative assholes who are angry at public schools for teaching sex education. These hitlerass republicans get all bent out of shape because they feel like sex education encourages children to have sex. Many public schools were sued and thus stopped teaching sex education.
Now listen the fuck up. Teaching abstinence-only leads to HUGE problems. As of March 2008, 1 in 4 teens have STDs (mostly HPV). Since abstinence-only teaches kids not to have sex, they do other things to fulfill their desires. The Washington Post reported in Feb 2008, a highschool girl was caught giving head to this guy in school. She didn't see the big deal, and when the principle pressed, she replied "It's not like we were having sex." Teens get the idea that sex is bad so they don't have sex. Instead, they slob the knob, and do anal. I'm not shitting you one bit.
But there's a big problem. Abstinence-only advocates disallowed teaching teens about condoms since they felt it encouraged sex. So any mention of condoms got the county school board sued. This is bad news, because teens have desires and wills of their own, and even if you don't have sex education at your school, they're STILL GOING TO FUCK. But meanwhile, they haven't been told how dangerous pregnancy is, or the importance of condoms. An entire generation of republican babies doesn’t know the first thing about condoms because their school was NOT ALLOWED to talk about it. Thanks a lot you fucking missionary-style beehive conservatives... you poisoned an entire generation with HPV.
Here's my favorite quote: "Abstinence is the only form of birth control that is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy." Yeah that's true, but seriously, what teen of breading age is going to keep themselves celibate? The guys walk around perminantly engorged, while their brains slam away at their skull saying REPRODUCE while hormones throb through his bloodstream. Highschool guys have to masturbate eight times a day just to be able to think straight, and you think saying "Abstinence works" is going to mean anything to them? At the same time, when a female of the same age walks, clouds of pheromones wafting all over the place. Let's be serious. I'm a decently ugly guy, and when I was 19, I knew that all I had to do was ask, because chicks at that age get stupid-crazy with their hormones, and they go into heat, pointing their ass at anything that moves. But of course with an abstanence-only policy, these teens do what their baby-makers tell them to, because nobody ever educated them properly.
Abstinence-only education is sort of the social equivelent of putting your fingers in your ears and going "LALALALA" about the nature of human sexuality.
Abstinence only education only talks about how to say no, but does not offer ANY sort of practical information should the occasion ever arise, as it naturally will. Since you have tons of kids who aren't educated about protection having sex despite the "education" they received, they are left completely open to infection, and pregnancy because those people thing that somehow admitting that it exists will some how encourage teens to have sex.
abstinence-only concept discourages the use of condoms or other STD protection devices, in the absence of which, STD's are contracted more readily. The premise is that people will have sex regardless of the sex education concept or method that is being taught.
When schools teach abstinence only sex education they are cheating the students out of precious knowledge on how to protect themselves. It is unrealistic to think that every person will wait until marriage. Teens are not getting the facts about sex and STDs, they are just being told not to do it. So now when they do "do it' and don't wait until marriage, they don't know how to keep themselves safe (i.e-using condoms). Teaching abstinence only sex education is completely wrong and puts teens at serious risk for pregnancy and STD's. How many times have you done something despite being told not to? We need to give kids the proper information and facts, not condemn them for natural feelings and urges.
The arguement that "abstinence only" actually results in MORE pregnancies is centered on the agument that "knowledge, information" are power in making decisions.
It rails against a duality that pits a moral answer against a culture that portrays sexualization of teens as "normal" and as "right". I think it is the dual message...and relying on teens to work out the 'right thing' on their own...that creates the basis for more births and more STDs.
The arguement that access to condoms, knowledge of the mechanics of sex, and being taught "alternatives" to intercourse will reduce pregnancies is just not demonstrated by the facts. As you point out, even with condoms and "alternates" to intercourse, 1 in 4 have an STD.
STDs are transmitted through sex - teaching kids to abstain from sex does not address the basic issue of protection from pregnancy and STDs. They need comprehensive sex education because kids are going to experiment with sex. Abstinence only education is a "head in the sand" kind of approach.
Dear Republicans, please keep your stupid, backward, 17th century laws away from my kid, because I much prefer a child without an STD. And pardon me for my mispellings but guess what, fuck you.
Thanks to: perfectvelvet, rigo, JackO07, Cari B, Barry W, for answering my questions. The world needs more people like you. And thanks to http://haildubyus.com for being awesome. Please go here for republican stupidity number 1.
