We have more gun rights under Obama than Bush
June 28, 2010 – 4:04 pmOn June 28th, Obama’s supreme court ruled a Reagan-era handgun ban was unconstitutional. The 28 year old ban prevented Chicago, Illinois residents from owning handguns.
Additionally, the supreme court reiterated its conclusion that the Constitution gives individuals greater power than states on the issue of possession of firearms for self-protection, meaning the lifting of the handgun ban affects every state, and not just the Chicago crucible.
The collective conservative mind exploded as it became evident that we now have more gun rights under Obama than we did under George W. Bush. In fact, Bush presided over an assault weapons ban for three years before it expired in 2004–no, it’s not fair to hold him responsible for implementing the assault weapon ban, but then again, it’s not fair to hold Obama responsible for Bush’s war debt, which lead us to a record budget deficit during Obama’s term. Regardless, Obama hasn’t had an assault weapon ban on his watch, nor has he pushed for a reinstatement.
During the 2008 election, the conservative lobby group, the National Rifle Association (NRA), swayed many people to vote for McCain by convincing them Obama would come to their homes and take their guns. The resulting panic lead to the largest weapons purchasing spree in American history; some estimates say a million guns were sold a month.
Yet, a year into Obama’s presidency, it appears that our 2nd Amendment rights are more secure than ever, and the NRA’s lies remain unfounded fear tactics.
