The CIA comes to the rescue, despite Bush

September 10, 2008 – 3:58 pm

The United States Intelligence community verified today what everyone besides the Bush Administration already knew: Georgia started it, Russia finished it. [source: Reuters]

Everybody with a half working brain, or at least a connection to Wikipedia, knew that Georgia attacked to take control of South Ossetia, and Russia moved in to defend. Yet even as everyone mused about Georgia’s stupidity, Bush backed Georgia firmly, chastising Russia for her actions against the small nation.

While the world looked at the Administration’s ill-placed logic in awe, Bush’s actions lead to several immediate unforeseen consequences. Immediately, Russia withdrew intelligence support for US-led anti-terrorism action. Next, Russia got buddy buddy with Iran, publicly agreeing to help finish the Iranian nuclear reactor (to date, it appears that these were idle threats). Russia also turned a cold back on any talks regarding an American missile defense system, which lead to Russia placing bombers in Venezuela and publicly exploring the possibility basing nuclear bombers in Cuba. Finally, where they were previously open to talks, Russia took a hardliner stance with their military.

You read that right; the Bush Administration initiated a second Russian-American arms race. Many people looked on with dread (minus of course the pro-war, anti-American citizens in America); but this announcement of Bush’s misjudgment allows most of us to relax just a little more. Regardless of how intensely Bush tried to lead American into a fourth war (right behind Iran), his attempts were quelled by the U.S. Intelligence community.

This is a direct mirror of when George Tenet, CIA director at the time, told Bush that no credible evidence exists that says Iraq was arming WMD. Despite the CIA telling the Administration that Iraq was not an immediate danger, and dispite MI6’s Downing Street Memo that told Tony Blaire that Bush was falsifying documents in order to go to war with Iraq, Bush still wanted to go to war with Iraq; a country like Russia, who hadn’t done anything wrong.

Just like they did with Iraq, the CIA did it’s job perfectly, and recommended that no causa belli exists.

  2. Oh lord, where do I start? First, you spelled “despite” incorrectly in your headline. “Dispite”? Really?

Yes, it was clear that Georgia made the first move. South Ossetia is part of Georgia’s internationally-recognized borders, and for years the Ossetians have tried to gain autonomy in their region. When the situation threatened to escalate to new, more violent levels, the Georgian military moved in to gain some semblance of control over their territory.

If you’re imagining that the sham government is Moscow is benevolent, you obviously don’t read many books about new red Russia or pay attention to the daily news. The Russians are militarizing at a breakneck pace and are the most serious threat, whether proxy or direct, to international security. They’ve unjustly supported a secession in a neighboring country when they should be fostering dialogue between the aggressors in hopes of stabilizing the Caucasus.

Of course Bush backed Georgia, he feels they’re more “democratic” than Putinist Russia (and they slightly are). All he’s done is send aid, he hasn’t mobilized any major military forces and will not approve any new operations in the region prior to leaving office.

That being said, by no means is Georgia the “good guy” in this conflict. They eliminated political opposition in their own country last year and they’ve refused to seriously negotiate with either of their breakaway regions. They left the situation wide open for the Russians to swoop in as the “heroes”, and in doing so they received a disproportionate and criminal response that threatened to topple Georgia’s government and infrastructure completely.

Look at this building and tell me if it, in any way, resembles a military target:

I will not let you abate the atrocities committed by the Russians.
