On June 28th, Obama’s supreme court ruled a Reagan-era handgun ban was unconstitutional. The 28 year old ban prevented Chicago, Illinois residents from owning handguns.

Additionally, the supreme court reiterated its conclusion that the Constitution gives individuals greater power than states on the issue of possession of firearms for self-protection, meaning the lifting of the handgun ban affects every state, and not just the Chicago crucible.

The collective conservative mind exploded as it became evident that we now have more gun rights under Obama than we did under George W. Bush. In fact, Bush presided over an assault weapons ban for three years before it expired in 2004–no, it’s not fair to hold him responsible for implementing the assault weapon ban, but then again, it’s not fair to hold Obama responsible for Bush’s war debt, which lead us to a record budget deficit during Obama’s term. Regardless, Obama hasn’t had an assault weapon ban on his watch, nor has he pushed for a reinstatement.

During the 2008 election, the conservative lobby group, the National Rifle Association (NRA), swayed many people to vote for McCain by convincing them Obama would come to their homes and take their guns. The resulting panic lead to the largest weapons purchasing spree in American history; some estimates say a million guns were sold a month.

Yet, a year into Obama’s presidency, it appears that our 2nd Amendment rights are more secure than ever, and the NRA’s lies remain unfounded fear tactics.

Voters casting ballots in the South Carolina Republican primary on June 8th will be asked if legislators should fight Obamacare and limit state spending. By design, these questions are very attractive bait for South Carolinians, who are strongly opposed to Obama’s healthcare plan and the current state of the deficit. The ultimate goal: gleaning private data for tracking purposes.

State GOP executive director Joel Sawyer admits the questions are designed to increase turnout in hopes to tag and track citizens.

“We’re trying to give added reason to show up primary day,” Sawyer said. “The goal is to ID those folks and keep them engaged.”

In South Carolina, voters don’t register by party. The only way to find out which way voters lean politically, is by seeing how they vote in the primaries.

Currently, not registering with a political party is a privacy that South Carolinians enjoy, but the GOP is actively trying to revoke that right. The state GOP and Greenville County Republican Party announced filing a federal lawsuit last Thursday (June 3) to force the state Legislature to require voters to register with a party before they can vote in primaries. Simply put, Republicans want your information; if you don’t give it, you don’t get to vote.

Following are the questions that voters will see in their ballot. These questions are “advisory” in nature, and have no effect on the law.

Question 1 – The healthcare reform bill recently signed into law by President Obama requires all American citizens to purchase health insurance or else to pay a fine to the federal government. The legislation also contains tax benefits and other inducements that apply only to certain states, benefits that were apparently designed to persuade those states’ Senators or Representatives to vote for President Obama’s healthcare reform Bill.
Therefore, be it resolved: The South Carolina General Assembly should defend the freedom of all South Carolinians to make their own healthcare decisions by enacting legislation making it illegal to force the citizens of South Carolina to purchase health insurance or participate in a healthcare plan against their will, or to comply with any of the provisions or mandates of nationalized healthcare that do not apply equally to all states.
Do you agree with the resolution above?
Yes
No

Question 2:
Growth of state spending should not exceed the growth of the economy.
Therefore, be it resolved:
The South Carolina General Assembly should enact legislation to limit state spending growth in South Carolina to a growth rate not to exceed the lesser of the annual percentage growth in income of the State’s citizens, or the growth in population plus inflation.
Do you agree with the resolution above?
Yes
No

Hippies, liberals, and California business owners rejoice: around 10:52 AM, PST., the California Public Safety Committee passed Assembly Bill 390, the Marijuana Control, Regulation, and Education Act, which seeks to regulate and control the production, distribution, and personal use of marijuana for adults age 21 and older. The goal is to tax every ounce of marijuana sold by $50. The vote passed 4-3.

But approach this with cautious optimism: The bill immediately faces a separate vote in the California State Assembly Committee on Health.

Most people chalked this up to a simple miscommunication. However this appears to be a less of a mistake, and more of a mindset.

On January 8th, 2010, Rudy Giuliani, the former Mayor of New York City and former republican candidate for President, spoke with George Stephanopoulos. Around 7:10, he emphasized that Bush kept us safe from terrorists by saying, “We had no domestic attacks under Bush. We’ve had one under Obama.”

So this theme of “ignore 9-11″ seems to not be an accident, but the real way republicans view the Bush administration.

Watch it for yourself here: Rudy Giuliani ignores 9-11 (Interesting bit around -1:00)

Echoing Bush’s surge in Iraq, Obama has focused America’s attention on Afghanistan, where the unhindered Taliban has been improving it’s asymmetrical warfare tactics during the past 7 years of Bush neglect. But now that Obama—the frequent target of undermine-at-all-costs politics—has acted to squelch terrorism, Republicans struggling to find flaws suddenly (and strongly) support isolationism. For 40 years, the hallmark of republican foreign policy was acting as global police; this sentiment dissolved overnight.

President Obama has announced his second escalation of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. He will send 30,000 additional troops to the region. Both liberals and conservatives are jumping on him for this; his liberal base is angry that he is increasing war efforts, while conservatives are crying hypocrisy.

Before I continue, it’s important to remind everyone that the only reason we need to focus on Afghanistan today is that Bush became distracted with Iraq, which allowed Al Qaeda to recruit and grow uncontested in the borders villages between Afghanistan and Pakistan. (Source, source)

So today, when Obama wants to increase the troops in Afghanistan, not only is it not comparable to Bush, it is a direct result of Bush’s misguided goals.

The war in Iraq was illegal, and not sanctioned by the UN. It was motivated by greed and the desire to make money, thinly veiled and widely debunked WMD search and anti-terrorism regime change. Afghanistan is very different, there is little to no financial gain for America, and although the war is not an ideal solution to the problems caused by the instability and extremism in the region, it is wholly more moral and acceptably motivated than Iraq was.

More to the point, Bush’s reasoning for sending more troops into Iraq was to “do everything necessary to win, and commit everything and stay as long as possible.” Obama’s justification for increasing troops in Afghanistan is to “get it over with so we can get out as fast as possible.”

These are completely different goals, both of which happen to start off with sending more troops.

Two things popped up during an otherwise quite, pre-holiday work day.

A few days ago, John Boehner, the republican minority leader, posted a letter on his website which slammed the Obama administration for stripping workers of their Right to High-Quality, Independent Investment Advice. Just for the record, there is no such thing. Boehner is an idiot and like many of his colegues, is making things up, which leads me to point number two:

Conservative bloggers complained today that the Obama was the most partisan president in history. In what world are the Republicans living? They refuse to work with Obama on important issues, vote as a solid block against everything he proposes, excoriate any Republican who dares to cross the aisle, then they call Obama the “most partisan president in history.”

The plot is simple: this very charismatic alien shows up, and promises hope and change, and indoctinates all of the youth to spread their message. Meanwhile, there is a resistance of people who’ve heard the truth, that know that all of these messages of hope and change are just fronts for the enslavement of humanity.

Seriously, the script is an hour-long John McCain campaign ad.

The embodiment of these sentiments happens around 25 minutes in. Erica Evens, the mother, freaks out that her son is spending so much time with the V’s. She finds footage of him vandalising in the name of the saviors. When confronted (25:15), Tyler Evans says, “The V’s…they call it ’spreading hope.’ ” Hope! That’s the evil guise in which the invading alien race is going to brainwash the world. By spreading hope!

The big complaint by the republican party is that people voted for Obama not because of the needs of the country, but because the situation was so dire that America voted for an unexperienced yet charismatic candidate. Or as the anti-V resistance says it…”It worries me that they came when we needed them the most. All they’re really doing is positioning themselves as the saviors of mankind.”

Finally, at 37:12, the method in which the aliens will take over the world is reveiled. Anna is giving a news caster, Chad Decker, an interview. Anna exclaims: ”The intent goes beyond just healing we want to provide complete medical services to all.”

Chad Decker (with an OMGWTF expression) responds, “You’re talking about Universal Healthcare(!!!???)”.

The audience goes crazy. Universal Healthcare is obviouslly the way in which an alien species will take over America.

The plot of the rest of the series is trying to convince other characters that by the time we figure this out…it’ll be too late…they’ll take over…unless we can stop them.

The rest of the pilot episode was a motivational rant about how the fundamentalists that are against the V’s are not crazy, and make the emotional plee that if you want to rescue the world, you have to resist these charismatic beings who want (cue dramatic music)…universal healthcare.
